Privacy Policy
Last updated 1 September 2026
Star Teacher is a live classroom exam tool. A teacher runs a session; students join from a browser with a code and answer questions. This policy explains what we collect and why. We keep it deliberately small.
What we collect from students
- A display name that the student types when joining (it can be a nickname — it does not have to be a real name).
- Exam answers, scores, and response times for that session, so the leaderboard and results work.
- Basic technical data your browser sends with every request (IP address, browser type), used only to run the service and prevent abuse.
Students do not create an account. We do not ask students for an email, phone number, date of birth, or any other personal detail. We do not use tracking or advertising cookies.
What we collect from teachers and administrators
- Name, email address, and a hashed password for signing in.
- The exams and questions they create or import.
- A sign-in cookie so they stay logged in.
How we use it
Only to operate the service: run live sessions, show leaderboards and results to the teacher who ran the session, let teachers manage their exams, and keep the platform secure. We do not sell data or share it with advertisers.
Who can see student data
The teacher who runs a session sees the display names, scores, and per-question results for that session. Nobody else does. We use Railway (hosting) and a managed PostgreSQL database as infrastructure providers; they process data on our behalf and do not use it for their own purposes.
How long we keep it
- Session results (names + scores) are kept so teachers can review past exams.
- A teacher or administrator can ask us to delete a session and its results.
- Technical logs are retained for a short period for security and debugging.
Children
Star Teacher is provided to schools and teachers, who are responsible for obtaining any consent required in their jurisdiction before having students join. Because the only data a student provides is a self-chosen display name and their answers during a class activity, we collect no contact information from children. If you believe a child has provided us more than that, contact us and we will remove it.
Your choices
To access, correct, or delete data, email privacy@starteacher.org. Teachers can also delete their own exams and sessions from the teacher portal.
Changes
If we change this policy we will update the date above and, for material changes, notify signed-in teachers.
This summary is provided in good faith and is not legal advice. Schools should confirm that their use of Star Teacher meets their local requirements (for example FERPA, COPPA, or GDPR / GDPR-K).
